Volunteer Scanner Positions

The Internet Archive is offering really exciting opportunities at our scanning centers. We are looking for volunteers at the Indiana, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, New York and Princeton scanning centers.

Help us digitize library books to go on-line to be seen by millions of people for years to come! We need your help! We are trying to get your public library books up online and need some volunteers to help our regular non-profit staff. If you can give us some of your time, we can give you a chance to help bring digital knowledge to others both near and far! Come join us!

Internet Archive is a non-profit organization working with 80+world-class universities and libraries to create the world's largest digital open-source library.

We are looking for people who are patient, conscientious and detail oriented to work on this exciting project digitizing books. Basic knowledge of computers, digital files and digital cameras helpful. Pleasant, low-stress work environment. A love of books is a plus.

We are seeking volunteers who can operate a Scribe scanning machine that takes digital photos of books from various collections, and puts them online for universal access.

Gain experience in the following fields of endeavor: building an open source digital library, digital photography, and digital scanning software, preservation, presentation and production of digital books. Digitizing special collection books from different centuries. Understanding copyrights and public domain materials.

Commitment: Assistance is needed Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Position involves a commitment of a minimum 3 hours and up, at least one day a week, as well as a minimum commitment length of one month.

For those interested in bolstering their credentials, we offer a four-hour, one day a week, six-week internship. Applicable fields of endeavor include digital photography, digital media, Non-Profit, Library Science, Computer Science. We will train you on Scribe 2 software.

Interrelations: The volunteer Scanner will interact with the Coordinator, the professional scanning staff and other volunteers.

Physical/Special Requirements:

  • Must have reasonable computer skills; e.g. can navigate desktop and computer programs.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift heavy books.
  • Must be able to sit for 1-2 hour periods and are comfortable with repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to gently handle special collection books.
  • Must have the desire to contribute to the world's largest digital open source library.

    QA and Customer Service

    The Internet Archive is seeking an organized, focused, and unflappable person to help us with customer service and web site quality assurance.

    Tasks:

    • Answer emails from our patrons. You must have excellent written English and be able to respond to users in a polite and timely manner.
    • Investigate and resolve error reports. You will become thoroughly familiar with the technology behind our site so that you can address issues and either resolve them yourself or pass them on to the appropriate engineer with as much relevant, researched information as possible.
    • Assist our volunteer moderators. We have an active community of volunteers who help us run the site by performing curation tasks and helping our patrons in the forums. You will provide backup support for these volunteers.
    • Support the Collections team with various projects. The Collections Department controls all audio and video content on archive.org, and we often engage in interesting projects such as LP digitization and physical scanning of archival material. You may be asked to assist with these projects.

    Requirements:

    • Comfortable working with Web tools and interfaces, with at least a working knowledge of HTML and/or XML.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to remain polite to our patrons regardless of situation. (Most people are very nice, but there are exceptions.)
    • Very self-motivated and able to remain focused on getting the job done.
    • Patience and a good sense of humor

    Pluses:

    • Previous QA/Customer Service experience is not necessary for this position, but it would be a plus
    • Experience working with digital audio and/or video files
    • Comfort working in a geeky environment
    • Knowledge of Arabic helpful, but definitely not required

    Programmer: Semantic Web Data Integrator for Library Records

    Internet Archive is looking for a programmer who can bring library records into the semantic web. This requires working with large datasets and doing analyzing, merging, and manipulating to bring these key resources to a wide audience.

    Open Library is an open source software project started by the Internet Archive to build a site with one web page for every book ever published. The site uses a new type of Semantic Wiki that preserves the structured data that already exists for books. Leveraging millions of library and publisher bibliographic records, we have already created a technology demo, available at http://demo.openlibrary.org, and we're looking for a data hacker to help us grow the site to the next level. Source code and various documentation for the project is linked from the front page.

    You will assist the current team of programmers to import data in MARC, ONIX and other formats, crawl and parse information from the web, and integrate and duplicate the records that we get from different sources.

    Open Library programming is done in Python, so some experience in this language is required. Please submit code samples with your resume. If interviewed, you will be given a general programming test.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Python, Perl, or PHP is required
    • Must have UNIX experience
    • Experience with database calling or merging, crawling technology, book data a plus
    • Experience as a technical librarian a strong plus
    • Philosophical alignment with the open source community

    Server Side Software Engineer

    Not afraid of petabytes? Want to write services that are used by millions of people? Want to help the open source world and open sharing of information?

    We are currently looking for a talented Server Engineer for the Internet Archive. Specifically this engineer will add an interface to this system for all the Zotero users and other projects as they arise. Zotero client application is a popular easy-to-use research tool that enables scholars to gather, organize, and cite information sources to support their research.

    This is part of an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded project for the Internet Archive to develop new services that will aid scholarly sharing, collaboration, citation, and annotation. The Internet Archive will work with the Zotero project team from George Mason University to develop a shared Information Commons (the Zotero Commons) for long-term archiving and public access to content contributed by scholars using the Zotero client application.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage process for Zotero Commons development and implementation, including interactions with Zotero Project Director at George Mason University and his development team.
  • Develop API for easy data exchange between Zotero server and Internet Archive Data Repository
  • Design and implement workflow process for applying OCR (optical character recognition) to scanned documents provided by Zotero users
  • Design user interface and item identifiers for Zotero Commons content in collaboration with Zotero Commons team
  • (possible) Design and implement application to upload new bibliographic information from Zotero Commons items into OpenLibrary collection

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have 4+ years of industry experience with at least 1 year of object oriented server experience: PHP preferred
  • Experience with Open ID preferred
  • Search engine experience indexing content
  • Familiarity with Lucene or comparable libraries
  • Must be able to develop new UI with both existing and new code bases
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience

    Web Engineer/NASA Images Project

    We are currently looking for a talented engineer to work on our NASA Images Project which involves gathering 50 years worth of still photography, film, and video created by NASA, and building an online digital archive of these materials so they will be accessible to the public.

    Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of JavaScript (JavaScript frameworks) experience on different browsers (i.e., Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc.) required
  • Strong CSS, HTML, MySQL required
  • Knowledge of JAVA and Tomcat a plus
  • Linux experience a plus
  • Server configuration and maintenance experience a plus
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience

    Responsibilities

  • Implement a User Interface based on designs provided
  • Continually refine User Interface, performance and reliability
  • Manage flow of all data received from NASA including still image files, digital video files and metadata
  • Work with other groups at IA to setup and manage large amounts of data
