Courtesy of probably the most renowned artist on Monotonik, Finland's pukka idm maestro Lackluster, late of DeFocus Records, Merck, Rikos, and a host of other labels, we have a rare treat - a full, hour-long live set recorded at Helsinki's M-Bar in July 2003.
There, using a laptop running the great Ableton Live software, Esa 'Lackluster' Ruoho mashed up classic Monotonik tracks, remixes, and on-the-spot jams into a cohesive whole - highlights include a gorgeous unreleased track, the super-catchy Ceniq remix which formerly featured on seminal netlabel Milk, the splicing of some surprising breaks into the classic downtempo of 'Bothersome (Mother Mix)', and the final jazzy ambience of a cunning Proem remix, bizarre voice modulations and all. Much kudos to Lackluster for not only recording the moment, but allowing us to put it out for free - return the favor and pick up some of his vinyl or CDs when you have the chance?
Tracklisting for the set is as follows:
00:00 01. starcell u.k. (container foc350cd/lp deFocus)
07:07 02. in passing (wrapping foc369cd/lp deFocus)

This is not a studio album/EP but a live recording by one of my favourite IDM artists, Lackluster. If you remembered, we have reviewed one of his albums a couple of months ago, CDR #2. Coincidentally, a few of the tracks from the album, like Starcell UK and Cull Streak, are chosen to be part of this live set.
What makes this live recording interesting is the live mashups he layered on top of the studio tracks and also the beats and edits he did in between the tracks. On top of that youâll also get to listen to a few of his unreleased tracks which are as good as the released ones.
The recording starts off nice and slow with a familiar track from CDR #2, Starcell UK, and slowly builds up to some harder stuffs towards the end. By hard, I mean with relatively harder beats as compared to the beginning of the recording, but we all know that Lacklusterâs stuffs are all pretty melodic and relaxing.
This is definitely one of the best live sets Iâve heard so far!

I wish I could have heard this set live. The tracklist closely resembles alot of my favorite tracks so I was very pleased with this set.
Nice melodies, better rec. quality than one might expect..
