Notes
Matthew W - saz Keith - acoustic bass guitar, percussion Vaughan - acoustic guitar Henry - percussion Rupert - percussion James S - percussion Vicky - harmonium, percussion Lucy - percussion the sparrow population of lower Danes Road - persistent squawking This was Matthew W's 35th birthday celebration, so it's considerably more saz-driven than most Drone sessions. It was also, rather unusually, recorded outdoors, so the sound was ameliorated by not only the sparrows, but also conversation, passing aircraft, road traffic, neighbouring students, etc. Players listed above tended to arrive and leave at different times, so in some cases it's just saz and percussion. unfortunately, Sam's clarinet playing didn't get recorded All our tracks get uploaded with the default title "untitled" since, as a collective, we have no straightforward way of deciding on anything! We are inviting listeners to suggest more interesting titles for our pieces. If any occur to you, please leave a little review (it's easy - see the link below) in which you suggest them. You can tell us what you think of our music at the same time. Any suggested titles we like may end up getting adopted. File names encode recording information, as follows: "010605-d2t1x2-2130to2412.mp3" would be excerpt 2 from track 1 of minidisc 2 (running from 21:30 to 24:12 of that track) recorded during the session on 1st June 2005. Sessions are usually in two parts - we fill one disc, stop for tea, and then fill another disc. In this case we went on all afternoon, and filled up three. |

Subject: saz-dominated session
Subject: saz-dominated session
The first few tracks are sleepy-sounding saz explorations with a little bit of acoustic bass and gentle percussion - the background birdsong and human chatter makes it slightly more interesting than it might otherwise be.
Things liven up a bit when Henry turns up with his percussion box in Track 5...almost an acoustic Orbis Tertius? jam at this point - although that trio (Keith/Henry/Matthew) didn't exist at this point.
Vaughan's guitar playing, as is often the case, is sadly inaudible.
Track 8 refreshes the ear when Vicky adds some simple harmonium drones. That tracks probably the highlight here.
A bit of the Orbis Tertius? "Afro-Cornish" riff features in track 10. Track 12 includes a hint of the Greek traditional tune "Kaike en Sholio".
Last track has some of the best saz playing of the session (Rupert alone on percussion).
