A couple of saz and hurdy-gurdy improvisations, recorded with Joel Turk in a caravan in a muddy field at Cannings Court Farm, near Pulham, Dorset, UK.
Notes
Matthew - saz Joel - hurdy-gurdy These were recorded after a very long and exhausting day, Joel and Sarah preparing for their move to the French Pyrenees with their newborn baby. It was around this time the baby was named. We went through a map of Cornwall (where we had all travelled together from 1997 to 2000) looking at the various places named after obscure Cornish saints, yet couldn't find anything appropriate from St. Levan to St. Germans. Joel later jokingly suggested that "From St. Levan to St. Germans" would be a good title for a Cornish nationalist anthem! Shortly after the map experience, Lisa (another one of the Dongas who we'd travelled with in Cornwall) suggested "Perran", the name of the drummer in the band 'Ting' she was playing with down in Falmouth. Perran, of course, is the patron saint of Cornwall, but there's nowhere on the map called "St. Perran", just Perranporth, Perranwell, Perranuthnoe, Perranaworthal, and the unforgettable PERRANZABULOE. After weeks of namelessness, "Perran" stuck, which kind of explains the titles of these two pieces. The second piece is rather brief, Joel pushing his hurdy-gurdy to make some very non-traditional sounds, before it drifts off into the beginnings of a Scottish ballad. On the road, near St. Just - Sarah on cart, Joel at the reins, Inge, Colin and Jo visible in background. Me with Joel, Sarah and others, having a picnic in Tregeseal stone circle later the same afternoon. |
