Download with Audacity
The way I've been downloading SBDs from the archive is by ripping it. For you old timers, this means re-recording the output from your computer's soundcard. You have to replay the full show while it's recording in another window (makes me feel like a taper... sort of), and be sure to not play any youtube videos while it's happening!
Audacity is a free, open-source program which you can use to do the rip. It works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Instructions can be found here:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html
Hope this helps, and happy taping!

Excellent
The sound quality is so tight, you'd swear you were listening to a studio job. There are a few instances of feedback in the bass frequencies, but that's common for any early Dead. Their acoustic sets are among some of their best, they always felt so much more relaxed to me. They didn't have to let the dragon out of the cage if they didn't want to, they could chill with the dragon, trade some stories back and forth. It's like a campfire experience, wish I could have been there. Compare this "I Know You Rider" to the one on the popular 02-25-1966 recording. It's like hearing two completely different tunes.

Very Easy Way to Download
Simply change the address name of any archive music page from "details" to "download." All the files will be listed there for you to download. You are going to want the ones with .

vbr.mp3 "fast filter", you can have the whole show in about five minutes. This is by far the easiest way . . . no streaming, just direct downloading. Of course, the lossless files cannot be accessed. Hope that helps.

scarface1013 wrote: "I really want this show for my collection but I don't know how to download it in MP3 format."
If you have a Mac or Linux I can't help you, but if you have Windoze there are a couple ways, depending on your MP3 player and patience: I use WMP (yes, it sucks but it does this well). Click the link to start the streaming. If you're patient: as each song's playing click File->Save As... and save it whereever you want. Then you can skip to the next track and repeat as necessary. If not so patient: just let it play through and check your IE cache folder when it's done for the files.
If you have iTunes you can then click File->Add Folder to Library... and select the folder the files went to. The files will have all the metadata needed by iTunes to properly catalog the files. I can't speak for other players or MP3 software.

Great Show of Course, BUT Get It For NRPS!
People throw 5 star ratings around far too freely, and that leaves no room to properly rate the REAL 5 star shows -- those extraordinary nights that people talk about years afterward and say "I was there, best concert I ever saw." This is that kind of show. There are a few moments like that in 1970. And all too few after 1980.
We ought to be able to give this one 7 or 8 stars. What makes this show really special and something to treasure is the addition of the NRPS songs:
Last Lonely Eagle, All I Ever Wanted, Henry. . . hauntingly beautiful (and I don't even like country music, but this is special).
If you haven't heard this one, check it out while you can. The Archive has a nasty habit of removing an ENTIRE show once a PART of it has been released commercially. Let's hope that the NRPS songs will remain up if they take down the rest.
NRPS and the Dead are even better on Capitol Theater 6/24/70. If you haven't checked out that show do so at once. Your mind will be blown extremely! And the acoustic set is even better than this one. Also, don't miss Capitol Theater 11/8/70, the last acoustic show they did for 10 years.

Re: Cartoons at Intermission
There were absolutely cartoons at the intermission. The one I remember the best is the "Sunshine" cartoon.
http://www.archive.org/details/The_Sunshine_Makers_1935
It had something to do with a villain and the weapon to defeat him was sunshine.
The little characters were singing , sunshine, sunshine, sunshine. Of course since most of us were on it,we all cheered and howled.
Like free union I also remember walking out at sunrise and driving back to Brooklyn for breakfast at the Paris Diner.
These shows were nothing short of brilliant. There was a feeling of celebration and comfort at every one. I couldn't imagine wanting to be anywhere else

This 6.5 hour show has perhaps the greatest performance by Jerry Garcia of all time and is the most ultimate exhibition of his guitar prowess that I have ever heard, if for no other reason than the amount, but the inspiration extant thrills a listener to the core of his soul.
Jerry plays acoustic and electric with the Dead and pedal steel with the NRPS - all brilliantly. This is a fine recording and presentation.
There are too many highlights to mention. Every song is good. I would rate this 20 stars.

this is not just the "late show" from this date as indicated. It's a combination of the early show AND the late show from this date - that's why you see two acoustic Dead sets and two New Riders sets in addition to the electric sets. Sorry to disappoint those of you in some of the reviews below who seem to think this was all played at once - it wasn't. Still PRIME 1970 Grateful Dead though :)

What a joy it must have to been there that night. Nice and easy (even though it sounded like typical NY crowd which the Dead knew they had to deal with. They played the audience like a fiddle and used their Prankster humor back at them.
Pig sounding healthy. Phil, Bobby, Jerry all playful. Was TC at this show?
I miss the FE, the chairs, and the smell. Bill Graham yelling at us our front to “ stay in line”

I need to regroup somewhat to hear the rest of this show... but I KNOW this is 5-star material... cos it's the Dead, playing at the Fillmore East, in 1970. One of their peak eras if ever there was one. Along with 1969, 1972, 1973, 1974 etc etc etc...

Cartoons During Intermissions
This was one of my first dead shows - there were several around this time that were split acoustic -> electric dead. I always leaned towards the electric sets - just felt more energy though I loved many of the acoustic numbers. But, what I remember from this or another Fillmore show around this time was the cartoons and weird movies they showed during the switch from the acoustic to the electric sets. Anyone remember those?? It took quite a while to make the switch and I guess they needed stuff to fill in. If I recall - the lights where done by Joshua........Anyway - it is like time travel to be able to go back 38 years!!!! and remember those crazy shows and times

Each audio file shows up as a separate MP3 file in your (C:\documents and settings\[your user name]\Local settings\temporary internet files folder. THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR XP, NOT VISTA. From there you just drag and drop them out to a new folder on your desktop. Then, burn away. They both hold historical/mystical appeal, as does the september Fillmore east run, and the Halloween Duo at S.U.N.Y. and well, a bunch others, after all it is 1970. I won't say this is the best year for the band, but I will say it is the year I am most proud of.

I used to get most of my Dead Tapes by taping them off of WBAI in NYC, and I got this one back in 96 by that method. It was awesome then, and it is even better now. That tape only had the late show, and no NRPS. This tape was one of the jewels of my collection (along with 5/24/69, 5/11/72 and 6/18/74) and I used to give copies of it as gifts for my friends BDs and at Christmas. And now I can again.
There are great acoustic versions of I Know You Rider, The Rub, and Cumberland Blues in the Early show, Bobby doing a duet on Me and My Uncle, Saw Mill, and Mama Tried with the New Riders, a nice Dark Star that includes about 30 seconds of near silence after the first verse... With both shows and the NRPS it's about as much as you could want from a '70 concert. Great sound, with just a few cuts and problems (notably St. Stephen in the late show)
And for the guy wondering why this is not a Dick's Pick...shhhhhhhut up ;)
For everyone else: (I know I'm not the first to say this) Get it before they make you pay for it.

The sound quality of this show is good and the setlist is one of the best. I think the Dead and NRPS do very good shows together. If your really a deadhead, get this show! If youve never listened to NRPS, this would be a good show to give them a listen.

dead fan and his love for the band
I never got to see the boys on stage to young, but what I do got is a sister that toured with them in 85 till the very end. What my sis tells me is that you dont need to see them in concert to be in love with there music all you have to do is listen to the music and understand how the music makes you feel and for the past 6 years I loved this band with all of my heart and every day I eat, sleep and think grateful dead. I never saw jerry but when I hear his voice sometimes I cry. dead music is my life and will be until my time is up and then I will finally meet the man that changed my life at age 14. thank you guys for putting the music that is so close to are hearts on the archive. Love each other and greet everyone with open arms. A 20 yaer old dead fan

Wonderful
Great show where the intimacy of the sound & setting makes you feel like you're right there. An earlier reviewer commented on the band chatter between songs... right on. I've tended to edit out a lot of dead air, tuning, or chatter from other downloads... but I've left this one perfectly intact, as it only adds to the experience. This would make a great album, and probably will pretty soon.

You get an unbelievable personalized introduction, tons of hillarious side talking, plus pigpen solo performances, some of the best renditions of accoustic and electric dead tunes ever and you get a couple of nrps sets mixed in there too!! this sounds like an album.
straight-up roots. this show makes one realize how truly underrated new riders of the purple sage are. this will give you full insight as to what these guys were trying to do with american trad (the dead and nrps collectively). plus it fuckin blazes. jerry's pedal steel playing is unreal.
This is without a doubt the ultimate show of all time 100%!! I couldn't be more serious.

I'm listening to a hi-fi stream of this show, and it sounds awesome!! For some reason though, this show doesn't seem to be available as a download in Shorten (lossless format). I'd really like to download it losslessly, without doing each song individually (which appears to be the only option). Can anyone help me out? Thanks so much!!

Wow!!
This is great stuff. This show really gives great insight into these kids(because you really got to understand, that's all they were in '70). After all the Dead (wheteher it be listening, reading, watching) we take in in our lives, they'll never quite be figured out. These guys just really wanted to have a good time back then. After reading "Dark Star", it really got me to realize quite a few things about them in my lifetime (which is '75 - present). My fist time of seeing them was '91, and what I would've done to just once in my life, see a show like this!!
You just get the feeling frome the very beginnning that they were really having a great time up there(which could not be said at any show I ever say them do, unfortunately).
The sound quality is weel worth the clicking on the button to download this absolutely stupendous show, grabbing another beer, and just waiting for it to finish, to enjoy this masterpiece.

One Of The Best
This is one of my favorite Dead concerts that I've heard, downloaded from the Archive or from tapes. In my opinion, it's amazing from beginning to end - I love these acoustic/electric sets that the Dead were doing this year. The first set is very, very relaxing and truely gets you in the Deadhead mood, as it hooks you on from the first note. 'Friend of the Devil' is one of my favorite versions, acoustic and relaxing, very good. One of the better perks for this show is that they play so many songs which you won't typically hear in a Dead concert, such as 'Long Black Limousine', 'Six Days On The Road', 'Last Lonely Eagle', and 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles'. Yes, I know they play them from time to time - but they're not 'concert staples' (at least from my point of view). The sound on this bootleg is crystal clear, crisp and bright - very well done. I highly recommend this show, especially before it becomes a bootleg. :)

My favorite show.
I got this show a while ago, and it continues to amaze every time I play it. I find myself just playing the first disc over and over and over. Pigpen is in such fine form this night, absolutely on fire during the Rub and Lovelight. Friend of the Devil is great, even if Jerry does flub the lyrics a little the first go 'round (but hey, he's Jerry, so it's all good). Candyman is oh-so-sweet when played acoustic and this night is one of my favorites. The Easy Wind is easily the best version I've ever heard, and I love the Cold Jordan, and the comment that comes right before it: "we're going to evoke your collective sense of piouty" to which Jerry adds "we're going to end this set, right here and now." I'd never heard live NRPS before I got this show, and I can't believe they didn't make it any bigger than they did, Six Days on the Road is breath-taking. What ties it all together though is the great stage banter and the way they communicate with the audience throughout the night, It's something I can't really put into words, it's like a timecapsule from 35 years ago. You need to experience it for yourself, get this show, right here and now.
Setlist: A+
Performence:A
Sound Quality:B+ (There are a few cuts in some numbers, that's all that brings it down)
In answer to your question, that's probably David Nelson on mandolin during Voice, not sure, but I don't know who else is could be.

A Long Night In NYC
5-15-70 GD Fillmore East Review
4 stars
I used to have a decent copy of the Harpur College show that is now Dick's Picks #8, but lost it a couple of years ago. Not feeling particularly well off to buy yet more Live Dead at this time, this show comes very close to matching DP #8. The first acoustic set contains Long Black Limousine, a very mournful song I ve never heard the Grateful Dead play. The rest of this set sparkles, especially the complete I Know You Rider containing the verse I d rather drink muddy water, sleep in a hollow log, than stay here in Frisco be treated like a dog. Very early versions of this tune (Avalon 1966, etc.) contained that verse but it is a rarity. I would give the 1st acoustic set 4.5 stars, the only mark against it being Jerry s flub of Friend Of The Devil. I instantly chose to record a 90-minute tape of both acoustic sets, and it went over smashingly at work, where I play music for the skiing public at Mad River Glen here in Vermont. Most of them are DeadHeads, and very discriminating ones at that! I also love the band chatter between tunes. New York City audiences were always and continue to be raucous and uncouth bunches. It is humorous to listen to Jerry stave off shouted criticisms of the wooden music and repeated calls for electric instruments ( Don t worry, everything will be alright. ) Some gal even shouts out Hey Jerry, what happened to your beard? to which he replies Shut up! I didn t ask you about your beard. Besides, it s not me. Priceless stuff! Set 2 is, in my opinion, also priceless as it contains one of only 2 GD performances of Ballad Of Casey Jones. I Hear A Voice Callin is a Bill Monroe bluegrass gospel standard that a quick check of DeadBase indicates was only played 4 times, all in 1970. I also agree that Friend Of The Devil herein is one of, if not the, best ever.
The first electric set features a mix of the brand new with the tried and true. St. Stephen sounds a bit strained, great playing but a bit like Jerry might be tiring of singing it. That s It For The Other One is about as good as any I ve ever heard, with a thunderous Phil rolling into the Other One that we latter-day heads are most familiar with seeing. Extensive drum solo in the middle also and some very spacey effects. Easy Wind is fantastic and it s obvious to see why it made it onto a GDM release. Cosmic Charlie is a bit ponderous and I prefer the higher energy, faster tempo version of 3/1/69 Fillmore West. Minglewood is mutilated by a screeching and howling Bobby. I do like this song, but Bobby s squealing is really over the top here and brings the set down a notch. Only 7 songs, but a fat hour featuring a 24-min. That s It For The Other One.
Electric set 2 solves a mystery for me. A buddy gave me a disc of this set through the Good Lovin , but it was unlabeled. I understood right away it was a Fillmore show, but only when I tuned in to the Archive did the mystery get solved! This set is a monster at 2 hours if only they played like that in the 80s & 90s when I was going to shows! A sparkly China>Rider is marred by a glitch in the very beginning of China Cat Sunflower (bummer!). Hard To Handle totally rips, and Morning Dew is exquisite with PigPen s organ tapestry tastefully back-dropping the building momentum of Jerry s guitar & vocals. Great crowd noise as is par for the course in NYC. The Dark Star is a bit lower energy than many I ve heard, but Jerry sounds great singing the far-spaced verses. The second St. Stephen is played with more force than earlier, but has a glitch and is missing the entire Lady finger, dipped in moonlight centerpiece. A rollicking 27 minute Lovelight seals the set and contains a very small glitch (switching tapes, maybe?), with a mellow Cold Jordan encore. All told, definitely a keeper. Now, if somebody out there has complete recordings of China>Rider and St. Stephen from the late show, that would bump it up to 4.5 stars!

Wow! Two 3-set shows in one! The sound quality is nearly perfect, and the set lists are exhaustive, to say the least... I divided it differently: 1 disc w/ both acoustic GD sets (minus redundant songs, like FOTD #1), 1 disc w/ NRPS (as above), 1 disc early electric, 1 disc late electric, 1 disc leftover GD (mostly the sick end to the 2nd electric set)... Just do it! The acoustic Rider is gorgeous...Haven't heard the rest yet...

Legendary For A Reason...But Not Perfect
In the dark days before CDs, the internet, and broadband, this was one of the most well-known and highly-circulated Dead shows from 1970, along with 2/13-14/70 and 5/2/70 (which have now become Dick's Picks 4 & 8, respectively).
Some famous Dead shows have turned out, in retrospect, to have been famous less because of their "best there is" quality than their AVAILABILITY. Happily, this isn't the case with this Fillmore East show, which really IS hot, hot hot. The two acoustic sets featured here aren't the greatest ones the band ever gave during '70 (5/2/70 featured on Dick's Picks arguably is), but they're sharp nonetheless. Among their highlights is perhaps the greatest performance of "Friend Of The Devil" ever given (during the second show - Jerry botches it a bit in the first show, but comes back with an utterly resplendent version the next time 'round), so good it's featured as a bonus track on the new Rhino reissue of American Beauty. Bobby gives a nice, somber performance of the rarely-heard "Long Black Limousine," while "Cumberland Blues," "New Speedway Boogie," and "Black Peter" are always treats to hear in acoustic arrangements.
As for the electric sets, "Easy Wind" found its way onto Fallout From The Phil Zone; it's one of most loose, free-swinging performances I've ever heard of the song, where the band breezes through the often-jarring tempo changes like they're completely natural. The "Other One" -> "Cosmic Charlie" here is a classic, while the "Good Lovin'" from the second show is particularly fun: this song could be a bit overbearing and ponderous during this era, but this is one of the more focused versions despite the length.
I give this a four-star rating because it's NOT the "ultimate" 1970 show. There is some mediocrity here - for example, other than that magnificent "Friend Of The Devil" the second acoustic set is forgettable - which knocks away a star. Also, there aren't any true WOW-I-CAN'T-BELIEVE-THEY-PLAYED-THAT moments: no "Viola Lee Blues" or "It's A Man's World"'s.
Nevertheless, the two Fillmore East shows from May 15th, 1970 are great, high-class representative concerts demonstrating the power and promise of the live Dead during this era. If you like this show, you owe it to yourself to buy Dick's Picks 8 from
www.gdstore.com.

Top 5!
I heard a rumor they were going to release this show. Or maybe I just started the rumor, ha ha. Oh,lordy it deserves it! A legendary show and for some reason isn't as well known as 5/2/70 or 2/13/70. No matter what your taste, it's on the menu tonight folks! Folk, bluegrass, country, rock, blues, etc. Four whole sets of amazing musicianship that really spotlight where the Dead were at in 1970.
Both the Dark Star and Other One are relatively short, but well played, as are ALL the cuts here. It's like hearing the Workingman's album live! (It was released in May 1970). This show is the Dead on the verge of being the supergroup they became in the 70's. The band is tight and in synch on the jams. The Black Peter, Cumberland and Morning Dew stand out for me.
A special show for when you have the whole evening to enjoy some magical music. Turn down the lights, light some incense and candles, take you seat. "Ladies and gentlemen........." Enjoy!

I was sitting 5th row center at this show and this has created some fantastic memories. The seamlessness with which The Dead and NRPS put on a show was always magical.
In burning this show, the Early and Late shows can be easily separated by moving the last 2 cuts on disc 2 to disc 3. It still fits on 6 dsics giving you 2 discs for the early show and 4 for the late show.
Thanks for stirring up some memories.

Transitions
If it seems like the Dead were always in transition well they always were. Musically their philosophy was "change" in a big way and this show from the Fillmore East showcases the Dead as onstage avatars to downhome, sitting on the porch playing oldies and folk as well. In a merge of the two in the next year('71) this truly was An Evening With The Grateful Dead.

I'm somewhat reluctant to give this the 5 stars it deserves because it seems that just about everything gets 5 stars now a days. But if yoy want to hear what the GD were all about in 1970 either get this or the performance from Harpurs Collage which is a Dick's pick. 1970 GD just don't get no better, and I wasn't there and I didn't go to my first show in 1994. If you want to hear what they sounded like at a pivitol period in their history this is the show for you
