Somewhere around the middle of this dark house-style mystery, it runs out of ideas. Cast is fine, locations are very fine, and it has some nice moments scattered about. But it wears out its welcome.

Almost passed this one up because of reviews. Pretty good mystery. Worth a Saturday afternoon hour+.

but the holes in it make the Kraft swiss cheese company seem like a hermetically sealed container.
The very last part finding the treasure was so hokey they didn't deserve the loot just for being so lame. It should have been a bunch of old rags or cans instead.
All in all i still enjoyed it even if large gaps in the thought process were big enough to drive locomotive fleets through.

An American inherits an English country mansion, only to discover it has been taken over by a sinister group of upper-class squatters. The plot deepens when the local constables and even Scotland Yard refuse to be any help in unraveling the developing mystery. The frustrated and confused young Inheritor is played by B-movie man-of-all-work Leslie Fenton. Perennial supporting actor Sidney Blackmer is his American detective friend. There are no weak links in a large cast that includes Muriel Evans as a mysterious love interest. The production values are more than adequate for a second feature. Fast-paced and engaging with a potboiler climax, this one is fun. The print is in reasonably good shape.

Subject: Not terrible
Subject: Not terrible
The storyline seems unreasonable. Here's a guy who finds he's inherited an English estate, and when he goes there he's confronted with dogs and chased off by armed men. When he tries to find out why - not just because it's his property, but also because he soon finds that a woman he's smitten with is staying there - he's told to stay away or sell it, but is given no reason why, which naturally makes him more curious. Maybe someone could have said, oh, national security or something equally plausible to keep him away? Meanwhile, no one is concerned that criminals are running all over the place!
The lead actors weren't exactly impressive, and the plot was very weak when revealed at the end. I did get a laugh when a secret stone staircase sounded just like wood when walked upon.
I downloaded the 512Kb MPEG4 file. Aside from small chunks of the movie missing, interfering with dialog at times, video and audio were fine.

I agree with kareneliot. A good 1930's grade B movie. The acting was quite good, even though the script was a little lacking. Four stars!

I lost interest in the plot after it became obvious, and just watched for the cinematography which is worth a star or two.
Interesting ending that shouldve been more of the plot, and the last-seconds sappiness is unusually endurable, but
Not to spoil the PLOT: The ending reminded me of Gilda Radner saying 'oh look! a million dollars!'
on SNL, if you happen to remember that.

I really did love this show. It's worth 3 to 4 stars. I gonna give it 4 of 'em on principal alone. MeÃÂÃÂ IÃÂÃÂdÃÂÃÂove slapped the dog stuffinÃÂÃÂs out of the old man with the pretty daughter and IÃÂÃÂdÃÂÃÂove wisked the blond haired rogue off to never land ranch and whomped mikeyÃÂÃÂs butt and took her on a train ride sheÃÂÃÂd never forget. Ohhhh, I forgot, IdÃÂÃÂove also had the whole batch of invaders ÃÂÃÂOÃÂÃÂ my newly acquired Castle Hospitalized and or jailed. Their uncanny arrogance needs to be squelched/minimized.
Good show and OTR Shows/ETCÃÂÃÂ Buffs will simply love the hell outta this movieÃÂÃÂ I did.

Subject: Good potential but quite a let-down.

Leslie Fenton stars as Barry Wilding, an American who inherits a mansion in England from an unknown uncle. On the ferry across the Channel, he defends a woman named Julie (Muriel Evans) from an unwanted admirer. Upon arriving at his mansion, he finds that it is already occupied by a family, the daughter of which is Julie--what a coincidence! Barry is unable to convince anyone (except for his best friend, who just happens to also be in England, trying to find a murderer) that the mansion is his. There are also rumours that the place is haunted, and screams can be heard coming from the house at night... Then three gangsters, an ancient parchment, the Home Secretary and Scotland Yard are all thrown in for good luck!
The film is very confusing with its intertwining plots and huge cast of characters who tend to all look the same; it would have been much improved if just the main storyline was left in and most of the "coincidences" were taken out. We are also not given any clues before the mystery is solved right at the end, so the viewer is left irritated, rather than intrigued, throughout most of the film. Also, the ending is a huge disappointment after an hour-long build-up.
There are some redeeming factors, though. The acting is good, and there are some amusing scenes, such as Barry and his solicitor, Mr Coventry (Jameson Thomas), trying to overcome their dialectual differences, and Cockney landlady Mrs Shipham (Rita Carlyle) with her false airs and graces.
All in all, "House of Secrets" is not a terrible film, but it can be confusing at times and the ending is below par. It's worth a watch--just one, though.
