The Peterson Institute released a new study entitled The Accelerating Decline in America’s High-Skilled Workforce: Implications for Immigration Policy at a meeting on March 27, 2008. Author Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, research associate at the Institute, discussed problems confronting US competitiveness due to the lack of high-skilled education programs and the related need to expand the H-1B visa and other high-skilled immigration programs.
The H-1B visa issue will erupt again on April 1, 2008, when the allocation for the new quota year will become available and be completely filled in one day. This annual outcome reflects the enormous demand to import skilled labor to the United States and, underlying that demand, the shortages of skilled labor graduating from the US higher education system. The Institute’s new study analyzes this fundamental problem and draws implications for both visa policy and US competitiveness.
