Some of you may already know Hotel, Hotel. They formed back in 2005 & have done several national & international tours over these three years. As part of the Texas experimental/indie-ambient/post rock scene (Explosions in the Sky, Shiny Around the Edges, The Zanzibar Snails), Hotel, Hotel stands apart for their more improvisational approaches to music, more atmospheric & less rocking out sound, as well as their instrumentation (two violins replacing bass guitar & vocals on this recording).
While we’re anticipating the release of their new album The Sad Sea on Silber shortly, I figured we’d introduce them to the rest of you with this live performance (hard to call something over 40 minutes an EP, which is what normally happens in our free series). Recorded on October 20, 2005 at J&J’s in Denton, Texas with a line-up of P.D. Wilder (guitar), Justin Lemons (guitar), Patrick Patterson (violin), Francesca Riedle (violin), & Evan Caverninha (drums); Under Sea, Over Storm captures the band early on showing the atmospheric post rock they’ve been perfecting over the years. One flowing piece divided into several song ideas, themes, & improvisations; this gives you an idea of not only they’re live show, but what to look forward to on their upcoming studio recordings.
