His flight might have been the act of a desparate man to gain peace!" (5) No Oil For Hitler - "The Middle East theatre of war! Britain's occupation of Syria and Iran forestalls Nazi drive into the rich oil fields. (6) Selassie on Throne Again - "in Ethiopia, Hailie Selassie returns to his throne." (7) US Occupies Iceland - "American troops take over Atlantic outpost to counter Nazi drives towards this hemisphere and to protect shipping lanes." Eight minutes of jam-packed historical war events of 1941.

I have started watching these Universal Newsreels by going chronologically from the earliest and this by far is the best one I've seen yet. The sound is the best and it is a wonderful example of the way Americans (and much of the world) got it's news for decades (well.. of course there were newspapers - but I mean news with images). It is a collection of the top stories from the year that plunged America into the great war. There are some great historical images in this example and it is a perfect example of an early newsreel to show future generations. I suggest to everyone to watch this and show it to your kids so they can see what life was like before TV and the internet.

This end-of-year-wrap-up newsreel presents the top stories of a very eventful year, 1941. Included are stories about the Lend-Lease Act, Rooseveltâs election to a third term, acts of sabotage and strikes, the flight of Rudolf Hess to Scotland, the British takeover of Syria, the US takeover of Iceland, the sinking of the destroyer Kearny by torpedo, Russian victories against the Nazis, British victories in Libya, FDR buying the first war bond, Halie Selassie regaining the throne in Ethiopia, and, oh yes, the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This has a great deal of historical value as well as being interesting to watch. 1941 sure was an exciting year for news.
