The Valley of Ashes
F. Scott Fitzgerald referred to Flushing Meadow Park as The Valley of Ashes in The Great Gatsby.
The great fair came and went. Today what is left of the fair is slowly decomposing back to the great big dump it once was.

Interesting, if somewhat dry
An overview to transform Flushing Meadow into the World's Fair of 1965 is showcased here. Quite interesting background information on how much time is needed to put one of these babys on. Also of fascination, this being 1961, is how many people show up for a bridge opening.
