Reviewer:Noah 8-? - - October 29, 2009 Subject: Amateurs All Didja Like the mama in the Waltons? Well, here she is in modern times. Her character here is also a mama.... a newly single mom.... that has to leave her son with gran'ma.
Now this here is a 'B' movie... basicly 'cause the author(s) couldn't decide on just what the movie was about, I guess.
Lessee; -there's the newly single mom having to cope with a new environment, dating, new job, her kid being raised by her own mother -there's vandalism at the church -There's the challange of a church choir attempting the Messiah
Yep, three complete story lines to stir into a single tale.... and obviously not much budget for the project.
BUT - - - - REGARDE' - - - - - ! ! !
There's a real gem in this ! ! !
The prima donna singer just absolutely loses it when 'She' is passed over for the lead soloist in lieu of a less experienced but nicer voice. Storming out of the choir rehearsal, the formerly proffessional prima donna over her shoulder accuses the choir of being 'amateurs'. Well, of course they actually are amateurs and almost begin to hang their collective heads in shame. Gently but deliberately the (also formerly proffessional) choirmaster addresses the choir with the admission that indeed they Are 'amateurs' but continues to explain that the term 'amateur' is derived from the archeaic root word for - love -. An 'amateur' does something not for pay but for the LOVE of it... and their presence and efforts to make the music of and FOR the Messiah are not for lucre but for the LOVE of it.... and he is truly honored to be a participant among them.
