Samuel VandiverCorwin Trails (January 6, 2006)

Corwin Trails is an odd mixture of ambient down-tempo with storytelling. This self-titled EP release from Samuel Vandiver incorporates a narrative element in each track that is blanketed with rich, smooth melodic phrases. Burried underneath these surreal landscapes are cut up samples of anything from children's stories to philosophy lectures.

"Hakim Bay" is first to stand out with remarkable rhythms and percussion, uniquely distorted, tampered and dismantled. Each following track is well defined in itself and produces an unique emotional impact, sometimes triumphant and other times melancholic. The playful melodies and vocals of "Icicle" create a nostalgic mood and are delivered atop tattered mischievous drones. The sound of Corwin Trails is inventive, distinctive and sometimes unusual, subsequently he is a welcomed addition to Archaic Horizon.

Subject: Wonderful music
This deserves multiple listens. The tracks individually are brilliantly produced and moving, better than many more well-known artists, but they all work to reinforce themselves by repeating and bouncing riffs and motifs between themselves – an obvious example of which is the piano line in Oasis Is Myth and the central part of Hakim Bay. You really should listen to this EP as a whole, as it makes a more satisfying experience when you take it in as a single 15 minute piece. Great stuff for fans of Boards of Canada, Plaid, Orbital and anyone else who appreciates clever but heartfelt electronic music. Note that the IA seems to have the incorrect track order. Check the release page on Archaic Horizon for the right order http://www.archaichorizon.com/releases/ah003/ah003.html.

Subject: Really interesting
This is really interesting. It is a little emo though. Kind of a combination of sigur ros and boards of canada.
