This programme is a parody of contemporary culture using the absurd. It pushes the limits of 1950s TV production, breaking down the illusion sets are meant to give. In A Show Called Fred, gags are replaced by the audience's recognition and appreciation of the subjects and styles parodied. Take away the need for a punch line- a coherent punchline- and it is not that different from Your Show of Shows or Ernie Kovacs.
This a very dry description of an innovative TV show. It is closer to DIY YouTube sketches than laugh track sitcoms.

Any humor in this was only in the eyes of the writer and actors. Aside from historical interest (Dick Lester directed A Hard Day's Night), this bomb deserves 1 star at best.

It's obvious the Goon Show is the forerunner to Monty Python's Flying Circus. I enjoyed watching the premier of zany British television comedy. Americans would never have any notion of what the average Britain would have been able to watch on the entertainment media called Television. Let's remember television was being developed from a live and problem presentation into what we now have as recorded television. Recorded television takes out the mistakes and errors and flubs so we can have this present day perfected programs that are usually stale in nature. Back in the day performers were seen often losing control and laughing out loud and ab-libing. Audiences used to love laughing along with the stars. Now were jaded and unimaginative.

That was bizarre. They tried to carry off the The Goon Show on TV but it lacked the talent of Harry Seagoon. Max Guldaly was there and he helped as much as he could. I liked it in a silly twisted way.
