Lewis MilestoneAll Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

Adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque, the film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered.

Subject: True Classic
This is actually one of those films that is so well made for its time that it became "timeless". The story is as bold and true today as in 1930 when the world was yet again facing the growing powers of global imperialism.

There are two key scenes in this film. The first shows the total bewilderment of solders when facing the complexities of war. The scene shows the solider running from an airplane, a then new and all together frightening innovation on the battle field. looking up in awe at this magnificent new contraption he is then struck by the true reality when the plane proceeds to drop a bomb and literally and figuratively blowing his momentary sense of peace away.

*****spoiler do not read if you will feel bad about knowing ending*****

The second great scene in this film is to me is the end scene where the solider is again lulled out of the terrible world which he finds himself in and instead notices a small butterfly atop the trench. The metaphors are obvious and many and i don't wist to go listing possibilities off but sum it up an altogether amazing scene

This is one movie any self proclaimed film buff should see and any war movie fan r drama fan will equally enjoy this piece of cinema gold. There are few times a movie has lasted this long in the minds of the people without being a truly great piece of art.

Subject: Wonderful movie --- bad file format.
A wonderful movie telling how a country and it's young men are caught up in the madness of war fever and government propaganda with the resulting horror, grief and terrible waste that always results.

When you watch this, you understand why the Nazis forbade the German People to see this movie and it helped me to understand why the Democracies were so very reluctant to enter into yet another "Great War" and why they let Hitler get away with it so long.

The larger .avi file is definitely corrupted because it shows a red 'X' when my video programs try to open it. The file will not convert to DVD with any of my software and can not be played by any video device I have. The .mp4 file works, but the resolution at NTSC is very poor.

It starts way to happy and unrealistic but it gets better. Only qeustion I have is if this film is realy Public Domain. Because I believe it still to be under copyright of UNIVERSAL.

I think the ending is quite dramatic. Sad, well done.....Shows how anti-war America had become after WW1 until the late l930's -
