We have used abstracted footage of a live dancer incorporating the character of Baba Avtomat, a human mind trapped in a Sex Robot body in a post-apocalyptic future. Her arms are interchangeable, but she is a little unwieldy, as though just getting used to the shell in which she has become trapped.
We have used VJ techniques and software to produce this piece as a live mix. In other words, instead of using video editing software and planning the work in a linear way, we collect all of the content, experiment a little and then jam visually to the audio track while recording the results. This method of working is closer to performance art than film-making, if you are looking to fit us into a genre.
One of the themes which we are most keen to explore in the Collective is the interaction of real humans with created characters in 4D space/time. What relationships will develop? Can an animated character lead such a relationship, or must it always follow? These are issues that we want to explore experientially, by actually DOING in live workshops with large-scale video projection.
This piece was done as part of the 3minutes.net project, with members Kat Black (VJ kattyb); Jasper Cook (VJ bunniboi); 3D modeller Dmitry Sergeev; Dancer/Choreographer Ellen McCarthy and Audio by Paul Elwin (Cordata). More details about these hybrid works can be seen at VJzoo.com
