Subject: In the Days Before Unisex Salons
This film, made by the AFL-CIO, gives us a detailed view of what barber and beauty shops were like before the 60s revolution turned them into Unisex Salons. It's pretty straightforward, with a mildly campy sequence where Dad and Junior have to wait for Mom and Sis to come out of the beauty shop (Dad chainsmokes 3 cigarettes while waiting!). Still, there's a lot of historical interest here.
Ratings: Camp/Humor Value: **. Weirdness: **. Historical Interest: *****. Overall Rating: ****. Also available on The Educational Archives, Vol. 4: On the Job.

Subject: Watch people uneccessarily fondle hair!
In This curious short, Barbers and Beauticians are shown to be the benchmarks of american Beauty. They're shown clipping away while the all too serious narration spurts out how important these people are. Curious hairstyles are devised by male beauticians in full suits, and union banter is sputtered out. an okay film.

Shotlist

"If attractive people are the leaders of society, then barbers and beauticians are the molders of leaders." This film shows the jobs of a hairstylist, a barber and a beautician and the transformation of an entire family. The father takes his son to the barber shop at the same time that the mother takes the daughter to the beauty salon. Also shown are women receiving manicures and facials.
