I wanted something that was as evocative as Jay Ungar’s and Molly Mason’s “Ashokan Farewell,” which Ken Burns used as his theme for “The Civil War.” I’ve thought for a long time that Ashokan hit the same emotional chords as Johnny. Most of the pieces I found on the Internet were over-orchestrated or performed in an Irish-drinking-song-upbeat tempo. When I played yours from the Archives website, it did exactly what I wanted.

We had the great good fortune to go to a school where American baritone John Langstaff taught us to sing and appreciate many of these ballads, as well as to ignite our passion for music and performance in general. Catherine's voice is rich and clear and lively and lovingly conjures up the story in the song. The guitar accompaniment is a perfect complement to both her voice and the nature of the ballads themselves. Beautiful!!
