Of Mice and Apes
It's always good to see Leonard Nimoy in roles other than that of Spock, as he's a really versatile actor. Although, he's essentially got a minor role in this one as a manipulative card shark, he plays the part well.
The episode belongs to Arnie (played by Cal Bolder) and Hoss though. The scenes showing the true friendship between these two men are thoughtfully done, even though you can see that it's ultimately all going to end in vain.
Again, we are shown that the Cartwrights always do the right thing by helping out strangers. They always give people the benefit of the doubt and are willing to give any drifter a genuine chance to build a new life for themselves. However, as we know by now, it usually ends in some sort of disaster, and more often than not people end up dead!
It's a really good episode though, which is unsurprising as it clearly has its roots in such a classic American novel.

Of Mice and Men Bonanza style
Dan Blocker gets another chance to shine as Hoss befriends a slow-witted Samson who can't control his temper. Leonard Nimoy is featured as a slimey cardshark. Cal Bolder plays the simple-minded, but potentially dangerous Arnie. A few years later, Bolder would also appear in Star Trek's "Friday's Child." In another Trek coincidence, the episode was written by Gene L. Coon.
Familiar title theme replaced by what sounds like a Duane Eddy tune.
