Phloby (Joshua Duringer) and C. Goff III (Charles Rice Goff III) met twice during 2001 to perform sonic improvisations using only vinyl record albums as "instruments." Duringer recorded the sessions, edited them and mixed them down into byte-sized chunks, named the chunks, and produced the CDR: "Book Of All Things." The following description served as Duringer's album notes for the project:
WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT? Following in the dusty path of the 20th Century sonic dump truck, this experiment into the underworld of Plunderphonics (the manipulation and reconstruction of multiple media sources) features a more improvisational approach. In fact, this recording is the end result of two hour-long sessions with NO pre-meditated concept nor specific direction. Complete randomness using four turntables (some quite broken) and a sampling/looping CD player (for vinyl samples on CD). We quickly found the chaotic nature of the combined source materials at times controlling the two of us and transmitting ideas, thoughts, and concepts of its own. Any associations or themes you hear are accidental and may make sense only with chemical enhancement.
In order to create a reasonable 55-minute seamless mix presentation, this project has been cut down to less than half its original time. The editing process was designed to keep the original spirit and condense the two sessions. No additional FX/studio trickeries were used in mix down.
