Subject: This is so interesting!
Subject: This is so interesting!
So interesting, in fact, that I did a bit of research about some of the people introduced in the video, and then blogged about it. I was particularly interested in the Freedom Sphere which is discussed at the end of the program. I found out that it was opened in 1990 and that most of it's contents had been ruined by moisture. For those who are interested, my blog post can be read here: http://texasgypsy.wordpress.com/2009/08/05/more-notes-from-the-golden-age-of-television/

What a treat!
And thank you, Cathyftr for the review... it gave a lot of insight, and helped with the question, "I wonder what happened to WTOP after this broadcast?"

Subject: ..And Broadcast House is still there..BUT..
Subject: ..And Broadcast House is still there..BUT..
...is now home to a health club..but the towers are still behind the building so at least some broadcasting still continues at "Broadcast House".
Good find !!! Come from someone who grew up watching Washington, DC's channel 9 ( WTOP/WDVM/WUSA)...had no idea this existed.
However the thing about this clip that I found to be the most interesting was where it was mentioned that CBS at one point had owned WTOP radio but had sold it long before this film was made. Actually that sale would haunt CBS some 30 years after this film was made. By 1984, WDVM-TV ( WTOP ) for some unknown reason at the time was pre-empting so much CBS programming and making public comments about how bad CBS's shows were at the time like Dallas, Alice, Press Your Luck, Bugs Bunny, Charlie Brown & Snoopy, etc..people really were expecting WDVM channel 9 to actually drop CBS and go independent. This came ahead in early 1985 when WDVM was airing "Carol Randolf & Morning Break" at 10am. The show was live and during the broadcast the then-WDVM station manager was giving Carol some reward or something..when this event went past after 11am ( the time WDVM would usually air Bob Barker and "The Price is Right" )..people were calling up WDVM demanding to see more Bob Barker and less Carol Randolf..well the General manager or some WDVM bigwig made some weird comment live on camera that "..hey we have been getting calls from viewers about where is The Price is Right..well this is more important..I have to assume those callers must HATE Carol and other succesful black women like Carol since they would rather watch Bob Barker instead...shameful !!"
Well...soon after that on air comment..Carol's show was cancelled, the bigwig had lost his job and WDVM was sold to Gannett and changed the calls to WUSA and those CBS pre-emptions on Washington's channel 9 had pretty much came to a stop.
