Douglas Wilder began his career in public office after winning a 1969 election to the Virginia State Senate, becoming the first African American Virginia State Senator since Reconstruction. In 1985, Wilder was elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia on a Democratic ticket. In 1990, he became Virginia's 65th Governor. He was the first elected African American Governor in U.S. history.
