Notes
The Nominal Rolls of the Canadian Expeditionary Force are described by Library and Archives Canada as the "lists of soldiers on strength with the unit on a particular date. They were generally created in the course of a unit's formation in Canada, often in preparation for departure overseas. Five copies of nominal rolls (army form MFW 20) were to be prepared by the regimental adjutant. Two were submitted to the headquarters of the Military District in which the unit was raised (one of which was to be forwarded to the Department of Militia and Defence in Ottawa). Three were to accompany the unit overseas. The first page was to contain a list of officers, arranged in order of rank. Other ranks followed on succeeding pages, arranged in alphabetical order, showing full name, rank, and regimental number. The original thought was that Canada would raise a series of Mounted Rifle regiments as part of an overseas 2nd contingent. The Canadian Mounted Rifles (1-13) were raised under 2 Mounted Rifles Brigades, plus additional unabridged units. All 13 regiments were raised from existing Militia Cavalry Regiments from coast-coast. The 3rd Canadian Mounted Rifles were raised 15 March 1915 in Medicine Hat and Edmonton, AB from the 21st Alberta Hussars and placed under command of the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Brigade. However, once overseas, it was found that requirements for mounted units were lower than that for infantry. 3rd CMR was redesignated a battalion, and absorbed by 1st and 2nd Battalions, Canadian Mounted Rifles. 3rd CMR was disbanded 15 November 1920.
