This is a montage of photographs that Alexander Gardner and his associates took shortly after the Battle of Gettyburg, and before the filed had been completedly cleared of the dead. Added to the stench of decaying bodies, there was also the aroma of 5,000 dead horses that had not been removed from the battlefield. It was a grim task indeed.
