The above sounds were entirely improvised by Henry, Mark, Keith, John, Matthew W, James T, Clare, Matthew S, Dan C, Simon, Vaughan, Philip and Julia using balalaika, dilruba, mbira, saz, bouzouki, acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic bass guitar, tablas, spoons, turntables, voices, cello, mandola, melodica, Wurlitzer, piano, synthesiser, "groan tubes", a Cambodian gong, assorted percussion (and probably some other things too) at Oblique House, Prospect Park, and St. Stephens church (Exeter) and the Rainbow Studio (Crediton) between 03/10/02 and 11/11/04. Everything was recorded on MiniDisc and later subjected to minimal processing. "March of the Hooligans" was the last piece we played during our first proper session at St. Stephens (now a monthly occurence). We actually had a small audience. This was also the hottest day on record in UK history. In the moment of silence before we started, the unexpected sound of (what appears to be) rhythmically chanting hooligans, with one voice shouting "ALI! ALI!", started in the High Street just beyond the church wall. Henry picks up the rhythm, a couple of us join in, Clare is heard to laugh, and the music follows quite naturally. "Camel to Giraffe 4" includes a spontaneous reading from a children's chess book which Matthew W. pulled randomly from one of the bookshelves at Henry's house in mid-session. Track 3 was Mark's first session (heard playing some rather lovely piano). Track 4 comes from a session during which we were "getting a sound together" in preparation for a slot at a little summer festival held locally. The closest thing we'd ever played to reggae. "The Prawn Mayonnaise Sandwich" includes a reading of the ingredients from said sandwich. Matthew W was rummaging around the Rainbow Studio looking for something to read aloud, and unable to find even a pamphlet, resorted to the triangular sandwich packaging found in a wastepaper basket. Track 8 was recorded in the garden behind Oblique House during our Autumn Equinox session. Julia Barclay, a visiting performance artist, can be heard reading cut-up texts she'd prepared for her collaborative piece An Alliance with Cathy Turner of the local site-specific performance art group Wrights & Sites. "Children of Harry Belafonte" includes Dan C scratching the word "Children" in at the end. This turned out to have been taken from a Harry Belafonte calypso LP. Our tracks generally get uploaded here without proper titles since, as a collective, we have no straightforward way of deciding on anything! We are inviting listeners to suggest more interesting titles for our pieces. If any occur to you, please leave a little review (it's easy - see the link below) in which you suggest them. You can tell us what you think of our music at the same time. Any suggested titles we like may end up getting adopted. Similarly, if anyone feels like contributing any appropriate artwork, or anything else, we'd be very happy to hear from you. File names encode recording information, as follows: "010605-d2t1x2-2130to2412.mp3" would be excerpt 2 from track 1 of minidisc 2 (running from 21:30 to 24:12 of that track) recorded during the session on 1st June 2005. Sessions are usually in two parts - we fill one disc, stop for tea, and then fill another disc. ![]() |

Subject: Well worth a listen....
I first heard of this group on BBC Radio 3 and downloaded this collection to hear more. Parts of the music are very reminiscent of Faust (Faust Tapes, Patchwork) and perhaps are a natural outcome of the way in which the music was conceived and performed. If you like Faust, Ectogram, S/T, Stella Maris Drone and others of that ilk, then you will probably enjoy this.
