elegant sunburst lichen (xanthoria elegans) - photo by Angie in MN All completely improvised recorded straight to MiniDisc via Sony ECM microphone, later subjected to minimal processing (a bit of compression, EQ, reverb). Recorded during twelve sessions between November 2003 and December 2006, variously at the Rainbow Studio (Crediton), The Phoenix Arts Centre, Prospect Park, Danes Road and St. Stephens Church (Exeter). Featuring Keith, Matthew W, Henry, Simon, Richard, John, Brian, James T, James S, Philip, Matthew S playing, variously, pennywhistle, percussion, acoustic and electric guitars and basses, balalaika, wurlitzer, piano, synthesiser, sitar, sampler, saxophone, water, gopichand, saz, bells, percussively-triggered radio device, burst baloon, harmonium, marimba, laptop, mandola, bouzouki, charango, bowed psaltery, voices and probably some other things too. "They (Took the Lifeboat up the Mountainside)" is based on another one of James T's 'found poems' - this time it's a list of titles from the Exeter University library catalogue which begin "They". They Took the Lifeboat up the Mountainside turns out to be regionally themed, as it's the title of a book by William T. Baker about the Lynmouth flood of 1952. "Fried in Hawaii" was originally recorded in mono and has had 17 inconsequential seconds spliced out of it. Everything else is exactly as played. ![]() |
