Camden Cypriot Festival 1991Conference on Culture and Coexistence in Cyprus

One day Conference on Culture and Coexistence issues involved in the process of rapprochement in Cyprus (at a time when the two communities were totally isolated each from the other by the rigid divisions of the Denktash regime and Turkey's occupation forces) which sparked fierce debate in the Cypriot community in London.

Featuring: Professor Floya Anthias as Chairperson, Cllr Graham Shurety,
Dr. Niyazi Kizilyurek, Dr. Yiannis Ioannou and Journalist Kemal Actunc.

This conference took place within the context of a 2 week cultural festival held in London's Camden Town area, which had at one time been the main point of settlement for Cypriots in London during the 1950's and 60's.

This video was uploaded on 1st October 2008, to mark the anniversary of Cyprus' Independence 34 years after the Turkish invasion of 1974 , and to highlight the continuing occupation of almost half the island by Turkey.

The debate on continuing recognition or not of the Republic of Cyprus by the international community was perhaps definitively provided with an answer during a debate which occured on 1st October 2008 in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe which debated and rejected the numerous amendments proposed by Turkey as part of its continuing efforts to produce a two-state solution of the Cyprus problem.

This COE debate was recorded in its entirety and the video is visible at: http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-4662851023561262099
