Mukherjee,T.K., Ehrmann, R. & P. Chatterjee, 2014. Checklist of Mantodea (Insecta) from India. Priamus (Suppl.) 30: 1-61. Mukherjee et al (1995), the only comprehensive article on the Mantodea fauna of India, listed 68 genera and 162 species. The catalogue of Ehrmann (2002) is the latest reference to world mantodean fauna. Ehrmann (2002) mentioned several Indian species were not found in Mukherjee et al. (1995). Many names have been changed or shifted to other genera. Moreover, few new genera and species have been discovered in later years. Thus 71 genera and 169 species are now known from India. However, occurrence of few species seems doubtful because of no further reference after their first report in literature. Several earlier authors vaguely mentioned locality as India, or Inde Orientale or Oriental India. This problem remained for many species and here mentioned as per literature references. Similarly, the type deposition of earlier materials is still a problem: some are confusing while some are believed lost, especially that of St. Josephâs College, Tiruchirapally (India) where types of Bolivar (1897, 1899) should be present. Mention of some personal collection could be seen in literature and it is uncertain if the types are still present. Unfortunately, few very recent new genus/species are lying with authorsâ custody instead of any national depository. Mukherjee et al. (2005) has categorically mentioned all the types of mantids present at Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata (Calcutta), India. The classification followed here is partly that of Ehrmann & Roy (2002). Two genera and fifteen species are synonymized here.
