Subject: How to buy a smoker's loyalty...
These 1964-'65 commercials helped introduce Philip Morris' "Galaxy" filter cigarettes, with a "built-in" incentive for first-time smokers to buy more; they took a look at what Brown & Williamson was doing with their successful "Raleigh" & "Belair" brands- offering a "free coupon" with each pack [extra coupons in cartons], redeemable for merchandise from a special catalog- and decided to challenge and emulate their rival by offering their own "dividend coupons" on "Galaxy" packs (which were already available, after October 1963, on their menthol brand, "Alpine", a rival of B&W's "Belair", and, like them, promoted in tandem with "Galaxy" in these ads). The fourth commercial features Richard Carlson, veteran Hollywood leading man and star of the famous '50s "Anti-Communist" syndicated series, "I LED THREE LIVES" {and a frequent star in science fiction films as well}. Whether Carlson helped "push" the brand farther in sales, I don't know [perhaps if you had sent in 40,000 or more coupons, you probably could have gotten HIM for "free"]. Print ads in newspapers and magazines also "pushed" the idea that smoking "Galaxy" was not only enjoyable, you could also benefit from the great merchandise offered in their "Dividend Catalog", provided you smoked enough packs to redeem those "dividend coupons". In a November 1964 print ad, "200 Starter Coupons" were offered as another incentive. Today, "Galaxy", I believe, is still marketed as a "cheap brand"- with no coupons in sight...
