A spectacular piece of cinematography...lousy film.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz called "Cleopatra" the toughest three films he'd ever made and it broke him, not to mention Twentieth Century-Fox. Yet when you sit down with a box of fig newtons and actually watch it, you'll see it's a witty, worldly, dramatically sound film that states, quite clearly, that history is made on beds, not battlefields. Rex Harrison (in the restored four-hour-plus cut) gives a remarkable performance, and the battle scenes really are superfluous to the story.

Cleopatra has some really good scenes, great sets and spectacle. It's magnificent! No, it is not perfect and should have been 2 4-hour films, one about Caesar & Cleopatra, the other about Antony & Cleopatra, which is what the director wanted. Of course once the film turned into a financial debacle, artistic considerations went out the window, and the film is flawed because at 4 hours it's too short and the lame connective material between great scenes is blatantly utilitarian. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the trailer. I must, however, disagree with your assessment of the film.
It's actually quite good with fine performances by not only the two famous stars (Taylor and Burton---who met and fell in love while making this) but also wonderful turns by Roddy McDowall, Rex Harrison, Martin Landau, Andrew Keir,Cesare Danova, Hume Cronyn, and especially that wonderful British character actor, Michael Hordern as Cicero.
If you mean by "lousy" that you don't like the movie you are howlingly right to say so. There are many films people go into raptures over that I can't stand...but I don't assume ever that my own subjective reaction has ANYTHING to say about how good or bad a movie is.
This one, I have to tell you, is pretty good if you can get into it.

The "clutter" factor is a problem and my options for securing a proper niche is near zero. Furthermore, even if the items are not full-length features it is quite appropriate to offer them here. To prevent further issues, however, I will cease uploading the trailers.

These trailers are valuable items, so thanks for posting them, but should they really be in the Feature Films section of the Archive? They're significantly increasing the clutter ratio here.
