Children of the DronePhoenix Arts Centre, 11/07/06 (Syd Barrett, R.I.P.) (July 11, 2006)

[If you're unfamiliar with Children of the Drone, the series of compilations will provide a better overview than these individual sessions, which can be quite 'unrepresentative'.]

Improvised music, recorded at The Phoenix Arts Centre, Exeter on 11/07/06 (the day Syd Barrett's death was announced).

Notes

This was apparently part of the Exeter 2006 Fringe Festival (which, impressively these days, seems not to have a website!), and the first time we've played in the main auditorium at The Phoenix. Syd Barrett's recent death had been announced only a few hours earlier, so the event was dedicated to him.

We attempted to do something a bit more interesting than a straightforward 'performance'; the audience were supplied with paper, crayons, coloured pencils and felt tip pens, and encouraged to create art in response to the music we were improvising. Examples of their work can be seen here.

James, Keith, Matthew W, Henry, Simon
left to right: James, Keith, Matthew W, Henry, Simon

Simon - electric bass guitar, laptop weirdness, synth, eggslicer, percussion
Keith - mandola, electric guitar, percussion
Matthew W - saz, balalaika, percussion, random dictionary readings
Henry - percussion
Melski - clarinet, vocals, percussion
James T - keyboard, percussion, water, poetry
Richard - electric bass guitar
Mick - electric guitar
Brian - keyboard, percussion

Paul Bull, who did an extraordinarily good job on the mixing desk, despite never having met us or heard our music, deserves to be listed as part of the ensemble on this occasion.

Also thanks to Claire Evans who came along and helped facilitate the artist interaction amongst our small but fairly enthusiastic audience.

The first ten minutes or so of the first piece unfortunately did not get recorded. We started the set with just Simon, Keith and Matthew W playing a gentle, flowing improvisation on bass, mandola and saz (recalling how Children of the Drone started as an improv string trio). Gradually, the other seven players joined the stage, one-by-one, in the chronological order in which they became involved with the collective (as listed above). Henry joined on percussion, then Melski on clarinet, at which point Matthew remembered to switch the MiniDisc recorder on. The remainder of this piece is preserved here as "Diminished Responsibility". The rest of the first set involved randomly selecting five players to play together for exactly five minues each, and other similar randomness-based techniques to keep things changing and interesting (and to avoid sonic overcrowding). At the end of the first set we asked the audience to vote for their favourite piece which we then attempted to "reproduce" at the beginning of the second set - hence "Heteropterous Dinner Jacket (reprise)".

A short video clip by Simon is here (he admits to having got a bit carried away with the psychedelic visual effects). A short clip taken by Vicky is here (thanks to Thomas for the editing).
