The 3 Mesquiteers At The Circus
An enjoyable, if serious suspension of disbelief needed, film with Robert Livingston (Stony Brooke), Ray Corrigan (Tucson Smith) and Max Terhune (Lullaby Joslin) as The Three Mesquiteers. A unique plot involving the Mesquiteers helping their friend Ed Cassidy (Jefferson Harris) who has been framed as a counterfeiter by partner Ed Pell Sr. (Thomas Rigby). The boys become partners in the circus and almost guardians of Cassidy's daughter while fighting to find evidence that will convict Pell Sr. Fortunately, the guys' easy camaraderie and good intentions overcome some of the silliness gumming up the works. Terhune doesn't overdue his comic stuff and wheezy Horace Murphy (Judge) and Willie Fung (Fung) add to the merriment. Anne Bennett (Nancy Harris) makes a nice Shirley Temple type daughter and Maxine Doyle (Ellen Reed) her strong-willed, but somewhat flip governess also add to the general good cheer of the movie. According to IMDb, between 1933-46 Doyle (also a singer) appeared in 38 films, and was credited in 21. The great Yakima Canutt appears as henchman Jake. There is one song by an unidentified group and we get to see Corrigan growl around in his gorilla suit. IMDb says it should be 58:00, but we get 53:08. Something for everyone.
