Subject: A Hot, Spicy Taste of Cracker
The sound mix is well-balanced, although the bass drum doesn’t kick in until song 3; the cymbals don’t ring much as the high end falls off. Compared to 7/5/07 St. Louis show, the mediocre drum sound is more than countered by the superb guitar, vocals, and bass.
Johnny’s guitar is amped up with heavy reverb and sustain – his guitar fills have real grit as he wrings the neck and bends strings to greater effect than even the Berlin 2006 postings (check out first 30 seconds of liquid guitar godhood on St. Cajetan vs. a 60’s sound in St. Louis). Mr. Lowery’s voice is more ragged than usual but his impassioned delivery even on his near millionth playing of Teen Angst makes you wonder just what girl there at the Taste of Chicago he needs Ole Blue Eyes’s help with. Sal’s bass is sublime and subterranean vs. just plain subliminal in most other postings.
I’m a new fan, and I dragged my doubting 12 year-old son to Grant Park for this show; in less than 45 minutes, Cracker had him converted. If they rock this hard when they return to Chicago in August for another festival show, even a set chock full of Jimmy Buffett covers would be a great show.
