Taped Rugs Productions celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2010, and to honor this historic year, Charles Rice Goff III set out to perform some compositions from the Taped Rugs catalog which had never previously been presented to the public on stage. The pieces in this collection were all recorded in the Taped Rugs studio in Kansas City, Kansas. They are all live, in-studio, rehearsals for Goff's performance at the Kansas City Electro Music Festival held on July 23rd, 2010, in Parkville, Missouri. The original versions of these pieces were composed on four-track cassette decks and were released by Taped Rugs on various cassette albums during the 1990's. None of these compositions was ever intended to be performed live. Because the live interpretations of these pieces presented in this collection rely on Goff building up audio loops to achieve orchestrated forms, they all have a quality of "creeping up" on the listener.
This archive contains both the official Taped Rugs CDR recordings released on "Creeping Eruption," which were recorded on July 7th, 2010, as well as an out take set of the same compositions, which was recorded on July 5th, 2010. Because performing these pieces in a consistent manner requires an equal mix of route playing and improvisational interpretation, Goff felt that including two sets in this collection would best convey his approach to presenting them to an audience.
The instrumentation that Goff employed to create these pieces is listed below. Goff had to print up written outlines (a kin to sheet music) to help guide him through these pieces in a consistent manner for public performance. PDF files of these outlines are included in this archive.
Instrumentation:
Korg R3 Synthesizer/Vocoder
Hello Kitty Electronic Guitar
Zizzle Zoundz
Boss RC 20X Loop Station Loop Duplicator
Portable Cassette Deck
Prerecorded Tape
Various Electronic Pedal Effects For Guitar
Various Guitar Preparations And Electronic Toys
Some Specifics Concerning The Original Compositions Which Goff Interprets In This Collection :
1) The original version of "Love Merry-Go-Round" was inspired by a dream. It appeared on the Goff solo cassette album entitled: "Vociferous Velvet," co-released by Taped Rugs and by the Berlin, Germany, outlet of Kentucky Fried Royalty in 1991. The "Vociferous Velvet" cassette album is archived at the internet link below:

2) In the early 1970's, long before Taped Rugs ever released a recording, Goff had been influenced by the music of Lou Reed and by the music of Brian Eno. Over the years, Goff covered several of Reed's songs, both in live performances and on Taped Rugs cassette albums. Eno's adventurous recording techniques and experiments in sound collage have consistently served as guiding inspirations for Goff in both his approach to live performance and to studio composition. The version of Reed's "Satellite Of Love" interpreted for "Creeping Eruption" is intended to pay tribute to the substantial impacts that both of these composers have had on Goff throughout the long history of Taped Rugs Productions.
3) In 1997, Goff, Michael Adams, and Eric Matchett began recording and performing together in the guise of the project called: "Turkey Makes Me Sleepy (TMMS)." The original version of "Sandman" was released on the first TMMS cassette album, entitled: "Swimming In The Sound Soup." While TMMS did perform in public a few times, the group never performed "Sandman," which has always been regarded as a favorite by TMMS fans. The "Swimming In The Sound Soup" cassette album is archived at the internet link below:

4) The original version of "No Me Recuerdo" was co-released by Taped Rugs and by Belgium's Red Neon music label in 1995 on the cassette album entitled: "Everything'z Okay." The piece features the interrogation of O.J. Simpson's maid, Rosa Lopez, by Los Angeles County Prosecutor Christopher Darden, during Simpson's trial for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. While Lopez needed an interpreter to assist in answering questions for Darden, it made little difference to the outcome of the trial. Lopez answered nearly every question with the phrase: "no me recuerdo," (meaning "I don't remember" in Spanish), and the jury never got to hear any of Lopez's testimony. The "Everything'z Okay" cassette album is archived at the internet link below:
