Subject: I Love This Band!!
This is a great band! I have always liked Donna and it has been awesome getting to see her live. The Tricksters are also a fantastic rock and roll band! A must see!!

Subject: A pleasant surprise
Like many Grateful Dead fans, I've always had a hard time with Donna Jean's vocal contributions to the band's output from the '70s. All too often, she seemed to be trying to over-extend her vocal range. She seemed to want to wail like Janis Joplin, but she simply didn't have the pipes for it. It wasn't that she simply couldn't sing--her vocal contributions to the 'Terrapin Station' LP prove she can, and her harmonies with Bob Weir on that album are some of its highlights for me.

Hearing this recording of Donna Jean and the Tricksters is refreshing. Her voice is more mature, a bit mellower, and she's singing within her range rather than "caterwalling" as she so often did with the Grateful Dead. She's doubtless matured in the past three decades and perhaps she understands her vocal abilities better now than she did then. Or maybe it's that she's in control of this situation and has the ability to tailor the arrangements to better suit her abilities. Somehow, I suspect it's a bit of all three. At any rate, this show is definitely worth a listen. It may just soften your opinion of Ms. Godchaux-McKay.
