On October 21st investigative journalist David Lindorff spoke in West Hartford Connecticut about the grave implications of George W. Bush's Executive Orders. Lindorff is the author with Barbara Olshanshky, of "The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office. The book was published by St. Martin's Press. His web page is http://www.thiscantbehappening.net
Here Lindorff shares insights about US Congress, startling realizations about the meaning discovered through a legislative effort from US Sen. Chris Dodd, and how several recent Executive Orders fly in the face of US law and the Constitution.
Lindorff explains the structure of what amounts to a new police state in America. The setting up of a network of secret prisons under contract awarded to KBR, formerly a division of Halliburton. KBR built prisons may be at active or inactive US Military bases under bill that states governmental concern is over natural disasters or immigrants. Why do they have to be secret if not to incarcerate US citizens, Lindorff explains?
You can find the July orders issued by Bush on the White House web page and of specific interest is order 13350 blocking the property of US citizens who supposedly interfere with the 'pacification of Iraq'. This order appears to some to work like a preemption doctrine against Americans involved in both dissent and humanitarian aid projects.
Lindorff also looks at the Insurrection Act, FISA,and Bush's signing statements which indicate he is the first and only President to say he is not going to enact the law. The signing statements reverse laws and limit Congress to the agenda of Republican White House.
What are top Democrats doing? David Lindorff explains his understanding that impeachment is the best way to respond.
The talk was organized by Connecticut peace groups and humanitarians Marge and David Schneider introduced Lindorff. They and others present have organized a group called SOD, Save our Democracy. They are gearing up to visit Washington D.C., to ask members of Congress to study Bush's Executive Orders. They are also drafting handwritten letters to key members of Congress to ask that specific Executive Orders be reversed. This talk was recorded at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in West Hartford CT by sound engineer John Schwenk.
