Great but not perfect
Loved Richard Basehearts performance, very nuanced - like the way he smiles _ever_ so slightly.
Here's a tip: Torrents are great to get a full quality movie. I found that if I start the torrent from the same session it's only about 30kbps, download speeds of yesteryear!
Start the torrent then close down your system and restart, plus restart your torrent software ... I get 4-5 mbps after that.

Amazing, Gritty Tale of Woe
I'm 42 now (2014) and I have loved black and white movies for as long as I can remember. I don't really get TMC anymore, so I've been pretty happy to discover the amount of public domain movies available on the internet.
This one in particular, however, was phenomenal. Although I did figure the initial bookie dying mysteriously was a little hokey...but the dynamic back and forth between our agonizing protagonist and the dame-to-end-all-dames was mesmerizing and visceral.
I'm actually a little sad that I can't rewind time just so I can watch this movie again for the very first time. That's how much I enjoyed it.

Simply amazing
This movie gripped me from start to finish. A story about a poor soul trying to reconnect with a lost love, only to have to experience bad and worst luck on the way.
Noir at it's finest.

"Detour" Is A Very Powerful Film
I concur that this is one of the best films on the Internet Archive. The acting is good, the plot holds up throughout the film, and the theme of fatalism is paramount. Tom Neal and Ann Savage (the latter not appearing until the middle of the film)play well against each other. This film is well worth watching. I would suggest that the overall theme of fatalism should be kept in mind by the viewers rather than the flaws mentioned in other reviews below. This would be worth viewing in sociology and psychology classes.
