My fave of all the APE films
(This is a review for the BIG version, though no changes have been reported)
Love it.
Good idea for a story. Wonderful opening montage. Great use of one, simple set for quite a long film.
The film has some really convincing animation at a really ambitious framerate.
Not a classic, though, as a second viewing showed some serious problems with pacing, eg. some annoying repetition in the dialogue, even though propably intended.
Voice acting is not too great here in terms of variety; if it was done by one person, though, it is more than acceptable.
Some more sound effects would have done wonders to the feel of this movie; both more variety in the sounds of like hitting someone with a bar and more importantly: this film lacks sounds for walking. This is most annoying in the beginning where there are no other sources of sound, either, with no ambience at all!.
SPOILERS
In my mind the story takes a really bad turn when the police arrive; it gets too violent; you have this delicious setup of two opposing sides passionate about their own view and then one is just told to go away while the other is beaten up... SHAME ON YOU!
The media should have stayed there to report the beating!
There could have been yet another turn to make things even bigger. What if, after full press coverage, nobody had reported to know what the door (and the sign) was about... Not the city, not the army, not the government... What if nobody knew and there had been real paranoia... (who built the door; terrorists? Aliens?) And still two sides trying to convince one another.
Well, the ending is too undecisive. Somebody might still try to open the door! Even a little piece of explanation concerning the purpose of the door (and the sign, which is just as important) would have made a proper ending.
