E.F. Schumacher Small Is Beautiful press conference UC Davis 1976 (?)
*
E.F. Schumacher gives a "Small Is Beautiful" press conference at UC Davis in (estimated) 1976 (77?). *
The first question: "The subtitle of your book is: "Economics as if People Mattered", people have always mattered, haven't they?"
(No) people are considered a (cost) factor of production. *
"Ghandi was the greatest economist of our time.
He said: There is enough for everybody's need,
But not (enough) for everybody's greed." *
If a society can't learn social solidarity, it will fall to pieces (happening now).
Questioners range from KPFA Marxists to conventional reporters (who don't know chalk from cheese). *
As always, he answers with humor and intelligence and compassion.
The only thing he got wrong was predicting China's path (who got that right?)
If only he had been listened to (even now).
Every locality must become self-sufficient and sustainable (as much as possible). *
There are some (tape) speed problems toward the end (at about 31 min.).
