Subject: Review for Extravagance. (1930)
Subject: Review for Extravagance. (1930)
Pre- Codes are films meant to be enjoyed. Not for some lefty politically correct kook like Dark Moon who's obviously hiding his identity with a username. IDMB reviews aren't always reliable on older movies because they are being seen with modern eyes and no appreciation for the time or the settings of the past and it's culture. And this attack on masculinity running the show for 9 decades as if that's a problem. Yes it's a very different culture: the 1930's and I for one prefer to the contemporary culture that breeds insufferable bores like Dark Moon and his , I don't want to see it any further by 20 minutes. What you can't handle a Pre-Code ? You are either a beta male or a wacko feminist.

Not quite on par with the great Pre Codes like Red Headed Woman, Baby Face, and Three On A Match. But it's a fun, soap-style yarn that moves along at a nice clip, no dull sequences. Gorgeous Deco sets and wardrobe, too - what's not to love?
One reviewer mentioned "details of motion" and yes, it's true. I attribute that to the fact that movies has just transitioned from the silent era. The players had developed skill in expressing themselves nonverbally that carried over to the early talkies like this one.
A little trivia: Jameson Thomas, who played Harrison Morrell in this film, played King Westley in "It Happened One Night" - and that performance was the inspiration for Pepe LePew!

Subject: Useful information
Here is a link to this film's IMDb page, which contains reviews that actually describe the film, and enough of a plot summary that the rest of us can make up our own minds about whether we want to download and watch it or not. Comments like "enjoyable movie" and "you should watch it" tell us that other reviewers liked it, but don't go very far toward helping us to decide whether we might.
I took a flier and downloaded this film just on the summary and comments posted here. About 20 minutes into it, I stopped and went looking for more info that might tell me where the story was going, to see if I wanted to stay with it and watch the rest. The review by 'planktonrules' on IMDb resonates with my own response to what I saw, and the plot summary suggests that it just gets worse. No, thanks (and no thanks, either).
Regarding this film's content, I'll only say that it's worth watching if you want to know who really runs the show in our consumer culture, and who's been running it for the past nine decades (nearly a century). That, and a book recommendation: The Hazards of Being Male: Surviving the Myth of Masculine Privilege, by Herb Goldberg (particularly the first chapter, In Harness: The Male Condition).

Subject: Infinite attention to detail
I know nothing about how movies are directed or made, and don't watch them 'analytically'.
When I started watching this one, my attention was instantly riveted. Something special is going on here.... what is it? After a while I parsed it out. Infinite attention to details of motion. Every finger, every toe, every eyebrow, every lip, is doing something meaningful at every moment. And it all works together. Again, I have no idea how the director accomplished this, but it's magnificent.
The visual equivalent of Wilhelm Ehmann performing Bach.
