Today is Good Friday. Yes, it sounds strange to Germans when you say Good Friday because this is the day that Jesus got nailed to the cross (if you are a believer of course). The etymology of the term "good" in the context of Good Friday, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, supports the meaning of Good as an archaic sense of good, "a day or season observed as holy by the church.”
In Germany it’s Karfreitag, which means Mourning Friday. Kara comes from High German and means "bewail", "grieve"‚ “mourn". The Kar prefix is actually an ancestor of the English word care in the sense of cares and woes.
And in the night between Saturday and Easter Sunday, we lose an hour and won’t get it back until the 30th of October. In my opinion daylight savings time is a real waste of time, literally a waste of time, because it screws with our sleep patterns and does absolutely nothing for us human beings. Most of the world doesn’t bother with it anymore. Only the hard-line capitalist countries use it to keep us in line. Twice a year they push through a directive we have no choice except to follow. Maybe one day we’ll get some intelligent people in the government and in the companies and the insane practice will end.
Lots of Noam Chomsky in the first hour, with a little bit of George Carlin to give you a cold dose of reality. And then at the end of the first hour, another wonderful episode of SUDS, the ultimate soap opera.
And all the music this morning is by my current favorite songwriter and singer Lucinda Williams.
In the second hour more Chomsky, and then more George Carlin, and of course more music from Lucinda Williams.
Enjoy!
I shall, in one way or another, talk to you later.
