Subject: Great Film
I have it on DVD. The actor who portrayed Roderick was a member of the Comedie Francaise. Margeuritte Gance was the wife of Abel Gance, possibley the best director of silent films. His was the epic Napolean.

Subject: What?
Nobody thinks the irritating "retro" watermark or the ultra annoying Spanish subtitles are even worth mentioning? That together they nearly ruin what the viewing experience might have otherwise been? Is this what YouTube has done? Made crap quality video what the mainstream now expects? Good Grief!!

Does anyone know the rights status of this film? Does it qualify for public domain? Thanks.
This film is well worth a look - stunning atmospheric lighting and effects.

this is great!
i havn't seen this since i was a little boy,
and here i am enjoying it all over,
but now its in english! ha!
i'm telling you this would be a good one,
for the remakes!
what other movies is this french narrator in?
i like the style and razzle dazzle he brings
with the talking!
also my french is a little rusty,
but it looks like he got it all right,
with no mistakes! except he reads slower
than the cue cards, but this just adds
to the flavor and atmosphere making it the greatest film ever produced!

Subject: Sense of wonder
I simply can't say whether I've ever seen any film as sumptuous as this.

Moment after moment, the visuals constantly unreel a sense of wonder.

Technically speaking, the mastery of double exposures is in itself awe-inspiring, but how were they able to achieve such effective slow motion in 1928? Were they really able to run their cameras at a high speed?

After viewing this lovingly handmade tour de force from the dawn of cinema, you see Tim Burton films, and other modern Hollywood takes on horror, for what they really are: greasy McBurgers squirted out by a massive industrial complex from the cheapest artistic ingredients.

Wouldn't you rather see beauty transmuted into terror? This is the real deal.

I'm usually not much of one for dubbed movies but I have to say that this one is surreal and haunting so the dubs really didn't distract from the movie. I found it interesting and entertaining. Thank you for this film.
