In this workshop, the diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder and its many causes will be discussed. We'll talk about why the "usual" parenting tactics don't work with this group of kids and how these approaches can even exacerbate the problems. We'll talk about how to help parents change from locking horns with their teens to being like a bullfighter that is able to step out of the way of power struggles. Issues of developing and maintaining rapport with both adolescents and parents will be addressed. We'll also discuss rekindling a closer relationship between parent and child through attachment work to create a closer, more open relationship. We'll also discuss "normal" adolescent development and individuation in a cultural context and how this process leads towards a different type of relationship and doesn't have to be a conflictual relationship as often believed is the norm for adolescence.
