As the definition of what is classified as “ambient music” becomes more and more convoluted, Phillip Wilkerson’s approach to ambient music brings some much needed order to the confusion. His approach traverses two straightforward paths. On the one hand, it can be quite personal in the sense of being genuinely warm, serene, contemplative and, at times, uplifting thereby evoking any one of several satisfying emotional responses. At other times it can take on a gently drifting, vaporous atmosphere that quickly becomes ignorable as droning, diaphanous tones quietly dissolve into the background. In my mind, this is night music - a pleasant, aimless diversion for a quiet evening.
