The relatively large jumping spider Phidippus clarus is an inhabitant of prairie and old field habitats throughout much of North America, living on herbaceous plants. Females can be highly variable in appearance, ranging from individuals with many tan to orange scales covering most of the body, to dark or melanistic forms devoid of most scales. These dark forms can be very similar to the males in appearance. This movie depicts a series of different females from Greenville County, South Carolina, as they feed upon their prey or move about on plants.
