This algorithmic art was created for an installation at Glitchgiving, and produced using the author's open source-source Freeframe rendering software (FFRend). The only content sources are a radar sweep and a programmable waveform. These simple elements are inputs to a digital emulation of analog feedback. The multiple feedback loops produce complex behavior, including bifurcations similar to those seen in fractals such the Mandlebrot set, but without the huge computational expense of fractal iteration. This video was generated live in real time, in XGA (1024x768) resolution at 30 FPS, on a purpose-built i7-920 shuttle PC.
Video compression is unkind to chaos-based art, and even in MPEG-2 much detail is lost. It's interesting to consider that all the software components required to generate this video--the FFRend application, the project file, and the necessary plugins--add up to less than 10 MB.
