This is a uniformly good recording helped by its restoration. It is stiffened, it's true, by non Carters: George Baker is an immaculate Maj.-Gen. while the truly great Peter Dawson is never less than reliable as the Pirate King even if it sounds as if it comes from the score (he was an ace sight-reader) not the stage. Dawson and Sargent had their disagreements, the cond. liked pre-recording rehearsals (good) in full voice where Dawson preferred to 'mark.' Elsie Griffin as Mabel, thinly recorded elsewhere, is on fine form here with first-class coloratura and I swear that when Derek Oldham duets with her in 'Ah leave me not to pine' he opens his vowels and nearly drops the faux Scots accent (for the optimum version, Valerie Masterson/Philip Potter 1965). Leo 'Sheffie' Sheffield gives us a music-hall turn as the Sgt. of Police. There must be a story why Dorothy Gill recorded Ruth (well) instead of Bertha Lewis whom she would succeed in 2 years time on Miss Lewis's tragic death. Was the main company out on tour?

Thank you again to those responsible for carefully remastering and meticulously tracking these early G & S recordings! It is VERY much appreciated!
