Taut and exciting Haydn by a great master
Pierre Monteux was a legendary conductor working in most of the 20th century. Here he conducts the outstanding Vienna Philharmonic in a very taut and exciting performance of Haydn's most popular symphony. The tempos are fast and the attacks sharp. This is no-nonsense Haydn recorded at a time (1959) when conductors took many liberties with the master. A truly great recdording well worth listening to.
