Making sense of neighborhood Decline and Preservation Buffalo Niagara
A number of factors contribute to neighborhood decline and many of these are poorly understood. Listen to presentations from a political scientist and neighborhood organizer as they unveil an important new concept that makes sense of urban neighborhood decline, turnaround, and preservation. In short, they look to the practice of commonly-held land, such as town commons, pastures, fisheries, and forests as a way to reverse decline in struggling neighborhoods. This approach can empower residents and provide preservation practitioners with an array of effective remedies that have been used to preserve the commons in its many forms for centuries. Their presentation draws from the experience of Buffaloâs West Side Collaborative and will feature interviews with Judge Henry Nowak formerly of the Buffalo Housing Court.
