The House On Haunted Hill

Vincent Price gives a stellar performance as the suavely malevolent host of a "haunted house party" who offers his guests $10,000 if they can survive a night in the murderous mansion.
Watch for the great Elisha Cook Jr,(he played Wilmer in the "Maltese Falcon") as the groveling homeowner.
The eerie looking home used for the exterior shots is the Ennis Brown house in Los Angeles, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. It was later used in the films "Blade Runner", "Black Rain", and "Rocketeer".

Youtube yanked this movie when I tried to upload. It's not in the Public Domain. Don't give these people a penny of money until they get their act together. I've gotten several of the movies pulled because of their inaccurate descriptions.

I saw this in my teens, in a high school auditorium as a fundraiser. Vincent was a master at making anything he was in entertaining no matter how dire it was - thankfully, this film has all the right elements to make it a classic, and he gives a stunning performance. William Castle's gimmick for this film was "Emergo", in which a skeleton flew over the audience's heads at a certain part of the film (you'll spot that point as you watch this). Recommended for Price fans or anyone interested in classic horror, particularly the "old dark house" genre..

I watched this when I was a kid on the Sammy Terry Show in Indiana. The woman getting backed into the acid bath scared the crap out of me and no amount of Vincent Price justifying it could make me feel better. :)

Vincent Price and horror, what a combination. I always said the best horror movies are those who tease with your mind and not show just monsters and bodies all the time.

I saw this movie when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I had nighmares about it for almost 10 years. It was the floating woman that did it for me. I do like this version better than the newer one. Scary is so much better than gorey! Price is a treasure; my fave horror actor.

OK, when I was a kid, this was THE movie to see. ALL the kids were talking about it. I finally got the courage to see it and it scared the crap out of me. I agree with the poster below about the skeleton. Vincent Price was a class act and a great and IMO, highly underrated actor. Not to mention waaay easy on the eyes. RIP

I think most of us 40+ types all have fond memories of seeing this film as youngsters. Of course ANYTHING Vincent Price stared in was GOLD as far as I am concerned. Back then before Cable and Satellite TV they would show this film on the "Late Show" and we would have to beg our parents to let us stay up and watch it. I think that the scene that I remember scaring me most was the skeleton in the acid bath - I know that sounds silly.....
The most intense, scary B+W horror film I remember from childhood was "The Screeming Skull" - I believe you can now download it here as it is Public Domain. THAT was a frightening film for a child.

I went to see this when i was around 12. I left the theater and ran all the way home. Once there i slept with my bedroom light on for several months.Perhaps i'm just getting old ? But nothing seems to be as good as it once was.And that includes horror movies.

Much much better than the recent "special effects heavy" remake, that dispite having millions spent on it was just dire......

The only thing better than the film itself was William Castle's gimmicky marketing, including having viewers sign a release to absolve the producers and the theater management in case you died of fright during the movie. They just don't make 'em like that anymore!
I just wish this one was available as an mpeg2 file so I could burn a decent DVD of it.

I For one likes horror movies and i have to say that this one was pretty good. How come Elisha Cook Jr.knew so much about the house? And Vincent Price gives a great perfomance by acting like he was the victim.he sure knows how to make horror movies like the one he was in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit And The Pendulum" he was also great.I give it 4 stars

Brilliant, what a masterpiece! Vincent Price in his most perfect role. I won't even overview or summarize the story here - I love this movie so much I couldn't possibly be objective. Just download, watch it, and decide for yourself.
