Welcome to part one of "Initiative Radio's" 2009 salute to the Mahatma Gandhi. On today's program Angela is joined by Desi Hip-Hop music emcee "Spills" and Grammy winning audio producer Charles de Montebello, to narrate a biographical account of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's early life.
Listeners learn of Gandhi's "sluggish intellect" as a child; his arranged marriage at the age of thirteen; his travel to England where he studied law and committed to a lifetime of vegetarianism; his short lived return to Mother India and the start of his career as a barrister and civil rights activist in South Africa where he and his fellow Indian brothers and sisters suffered brutal racism and physical abuse for decades.
Gandhi's philosophy is represented throughout the program by way of a variety of recording artists from diverse musical genres.
